The team already has two walk-year pitchers in the starting rotation and a bullpen chock-full of reclamation projects.

You can never have enough bad pitching.

You would hope that the White Sox would go out and pay for a mid range free agent starting pitcher this year. Their payroll has to be low enough to allow this.

Sure, they can afford it, but that would take opportunities away from the kids and reclamation projects. Improvement from the kids and reclamation projects is necessary to build the team back into a contender. A mid-range free agent won't help with that (given the team's history of not giving pitchers long contracts).

Agreed.

We aren’t trying to compete this year. We SHOULDN’T try to compete this year.

We have three young pitchers - Giolito, Lopez, and Fulmer - who need an opportunity to demonstrate if they can have long-term success as starters, or
to see if their future is in the bullpen.

Later this year, Rodon should return.

At some point, Kopech should be ready to join the rotation.

Whenever that happens, either a poorly performing youngster - Giolito, Lopez, or Fulmer - can go to the pen or Charlotte, or Gonzalez or Shields can go to long relief or be traded or DFA’d.

After the 2018 season concludes, we’ll see if we need to invest in a longer-term contract for a veteran starter.

But though FRATER laughed openly, he wept secretly; and really he neither laughed nor wept. Nor did he mean what he said.
