WLS's big nighttime signal has always been a strength, but if the owner is bankrupt it doesn't matter how many states it covers.

WGN is the logical choice unless the new owners impose a complete spending freeze, and they could probably get the Sox rights for a good price since there aren't many options.

Bad timing all the way around for the Sox though: rebuild a couple more years, Cubs a hot ticket, and now the radio station in bankruptcy.

But hey, we've still got Shields!

I doubt this will have any affect Farmer and DJ's employment status. I don't know the details of their contracts, but don't they really work for the Sox and not WLS?

WBBM-AM and WGN-AM would be good destinations if the WLS deal is voided. As far as WMVP goes, my biggest concern about them returning to AM 1000 is that their signal isn't that great and they don't have nearly the coverage as other AM stations do.

Here's another article on the bid to end the Sox and Bulls deal:

As Sox Director of Broadcast Operations Bob Grim told me when I interviewed him, Sox announcers are paid by the radio station not the Sox themselves and they are employees of said station.

The Sox certainly have a say in the selection of the announcers but they don't pay them.

WGN would be nice for the Sox, considering it is a blowtorch and it's sports past.

That said, I agree that the Sox just aren't a right fit for WLS (though I still think it was a bad idea for them to dump Roe Conn in favor of Steve Dahl)

As long as they don't land on WTAQ in LaGrange, everything will be fine.

So, does this mean that the Sox will be on a new radio station for the 2018 season?

Doesn't matter where they land.

Farmer is the worst PBP guy I've ever heard.

He misses so many pitches and plays it's unbearable.

So, if the new station prefers new announcers, for whatever specific reason, there's a possibility of no Ed & DJ?

Yes, it's possible but the Sox still have a say in that.

whitesox.com says that WLS intends to end their broadcast agreement with the Sox and Bulls effective Feb. 1. That's pretty sudden for especially the Bulls to have to find a new radio home mid-season.

I wish that led to a change. Unfortunately I don’t think it changes until JR no longer owns the team or Farmer decides to retire. If he does, perhaps they would use it as an opportunity to get rid of DJ too. Make them Ambassadors or something but please, just get a better pair.

As far as stations, I would selfishly ask for someone with good coverage to the south.

Both Farmer and DJ are fine as color analysts. But neither of them are skilled at play-by-play, and in particular Farmerís PBP brings down the quality of DJís work.

Find a PBP announcer for the radio, and let Farmer continue to be the primary color analyst. He did it for years with Rooney and was great.

Keep DJ around as the primary backup for both radio and TV. Stone strikes me as someone who doesnít necessarily want to retire soon, but he might like to cut back on the road trips. Jackson could sub for Stone.

How much say will they have if they are coming into negotiations from a position of weakness?

I'm not ruling out the possibility that Cumulus is taking this position to pressure the Sox and Bulls to renegotiate their deals with terms more favorable to Cumulus. Everything is subject to the Bankruptcy Court's approval, but announcing a 2/1/18 termination date puts the Sox and Bulls at a disadvantage for negotiating new deals with new stations or renegotiating their deals with Cumulus.

I agree. If Farmer was the color with a new pbp, I'd listen, but the current combo is terrible.

Maybe whatever deal is reached, if they haven't signed announcers, we get the Sox Army to influence a decision. But, I suppose, since it's so late in the game, how do you find a pbp guy that fast? Than again, they really have 2 months to find a better solution, as long as a deal with a station is signed soon.

I would have to think, whatever stations they were negotiating with before, would be in play, and the proposals should still be in their files, but of course now with a little tweaking.
