He caught a cup of coffee with the Red Sox in 2016 wasn't his clock already ticking?

Moncada was not on Bostonís 40-man until he was added to the 25-man in September of 2016. That means he had three option years remaining when he was traded here. He used one in 2017. He could have developed in Charlotte for all of 2017 and been charged with the same one option year. 2018 would have been a second option year.

Theoretically, Moncada could have developed in Charlotte until Opening Day 2020. He was promoted because the team thought he was ready for the majors, not because he had to be promoted.

That's fine I just assumed since he spent time on the Red Sox his clock was ticking on service time too.

I think Moncada HAD to develop in the majors personally. He was hitting AAA pitching. I don't think his eye or contact was going to markedly improve vs. guys who struggle with command (the general truth of AAA pitching). The way this kid is, he needs to see as much high quality pitching as possible.

Exactly. One canít learn to hit major league pitching in the minor leagues.

Especially this kid. His eye is awesome, but if you watch he is taking pitches that don't end up strikes in the minors. So he has to learn that. Also, the way his swing is, he is going to struggle sometimes turning on the inside pitch, and that is not a problem he is going to have in the minors.

It also means he is going to be a slow developer with a greater risk of not working out. That said, I would not be shocked in the least if we see a .250-.350-.450 20/20 year out of him next year.

They promoted Moncada too early; but, other than lost service time, it hasn't hurt him. He didn't develop any bad habits like many do when over-matched in the majors. He maintained his plate discipline. He really should be ready to break-out soon.

I really enjoy watching Mallex Smith play, I wonder why the Rays would want to trade him.

Harper loves Chicago. Two of his home town friends are there.
