Sox might be able to counter that by asking for a reverse option clause. Not sure it can be done, but say 10 years 350 with 250 paid in the first 5 and then an opt out after 7 but a player option of say -10M if they opt out.

Edit: would have to be more like 240 over first 6 with 110 over final 4 to make it work. No way they could tie up 100 in two contracts for the next 5 years, but 80 they could probably handle.

Riding shotgun on the Sox bandwagon since before there was an Internet...
