Confirms less ABs in 2020 than a lot of people were thinking before getting Grandal.

These are White Sox fans. Some can't get over Jerry Reinsdorf breathing wrong on them during a chance meeting in 1981.

I am a McCann skeptic. He had a negative-WAR season in 2018 and his 2019 season accounts for half of his career war. He will regress in 2020, and regress bigly. I wanted him traded at the 2019 deadline for this reason.

With Grandal on board, I am OK with rolling the dice on McCann as the backup catcher. He may or may not hit well enough in 2019, but there's a chance Collins could actually develop that offsets some of the risk.

Terrific signing! Just what I have been hoping for. Now they just need to sign or trade for two quality starters, a right fielder, and a couple of quality bullpen arms and the race is on! Finally can look forward to a competitive White Sox season; it doesn’t get any better!

I like this signing, but he can't be our big fish. We won't get any of the top 3, but we need 3 of the top 10. Get me Wheeler and Castellanos (or as mentioned, a trade for a guy like Marte) and lets go

I did lobby hard, but it wasn’t just me. And others had the idea first.

The self-congratulatory stuff from Garfein, Merkin, and Duber today is just ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong...I'm happy we signed a guy that can take a walk. But if we walk away this offseason with Grandal and back end starters, we're in a lot of trouble.
Does your pessimism ever take a day off? Enjoy the move for what it is. We can evaluate the offseason as a whole in February once pitchers and catchers report.

A player cannot be offered a QO more than once. He opted out of his deal this year, didn't turn down a QO. No pick involved.

Not true at all. This move allows Collins to be part of the 2020 team. Collins' defense is not that of an MLB-caliber catcher, even in a backup role. We saw that last year in how reluctant Renteria was to start him behind the plate even when he is up. With Grandal in the fold Collins will get most of his ABs as the primary DH against RHP. Collins wasn't going to have that role if he was the only other catcher on the roster.

With no Grandal, there's a good chance that Collins would have been sent down by May because he wasn't getting any ABs and the Sox needed a real backup catcher. Where they would find such a player in the organization beats me. Fortunately that question is now moot.

This also gives Collins another year to hopefully improve defensively, learning from one of the best in the business who he apparently already has a mentor/mentee relationship with. The Grandal signing is the best possible move for his development.

I guess that depends on if they think Collins can learn/improve his catching abilities by not getting actual game reps, or very limited. Usually doesn't happen or a sure way of knowing progress.

This Grandal move also signals a win-now mode for the Sox, and giving possibly half the DH starts to a questionable bat like Collins doesn't make sense for a contending team. There's a very real chance that he would have similar output to what Alonso did last year at DH.

Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Good to see us solidify the position.

I still think Collins is going to surprise some folks with his bat. This move takes the pressure off his D and let's him platoon at 1B, DH and C. That is something I had hoped for to maximize his value, and think it will be worth every cent.
