Have been told Van Dyke is retiring at the end of the month. He subbed for Gonzo and Sully when the teams were at home and the regular beat writers were given the weekend off.

But though FRATER laughed openly, he wept secretly; and really he neither laughed nor wept. Nor did he mean what he said. |

Would love to do it although even with the technological advances, it would be hard to get postgame quotes from Idaho

I'm told the Count Dracula of Sports Journalism, Jay Mariotti wants to come back to Chicago. He is unemployed now and can't find a job.

Was wondering if I had a shot at this, but haven't been around nearly long enough to merit consideration.

Either way, if you could get a job writing baseball for the Tribune, wouldn't you move?

Lamp:
Grew up in Chicago, South Side, went to Brother Rice. Went to the University of Kentucky. Worked in Lexington, worked 12 years in Monroe, Louisiana went to Pocatello as sports director at KPVI-TV in January 93. Have been a Sox fan all my life. Remember this position is basically part time, I don't think Van Dyke worked full time. They've got Gonzo and Sully covering the teams, this was just basically on home weekends when those guys got the weekend off and for about six weeks during the off season / spring training. Considering what it costs to live in Chicago compared to Idaho, I honestly don't think they'd pay enough. Lip |

I have always believed that I could never properly cover the White Sox and continue to derive enjoyment from being a White Sox fan. Still, 30 years ago, even 15, this would have been my dream job. On the plus side, I don't have any public relations on my resume. My longterm beat experience, though, involves criminal justice and political matters. If they go with a news person, I would expect they would be most likely go with someone in house whose work and ethics they know.
This looks like an intense job with much more to worry about than rolling print deadlines. The good newspaper jobs are so much fewer than they used to be that the competiton for this one figures to be fierce. |
