Default Carlos Rodon to make first rehab start

Interestingly at Winston-Salem. Would have thought with Birmingham having a double header it would have been there even though W/S has a doubleheader as well.

It seemed as if he struggled a bit.

A pair of three-pitch strikeouts and a four-pitch strikeout in the first inning. Not bad.

What is most important is whether or not he can make another start in a few days.

I'm sure after not facing live hitters in game conditions since mid March his control was off. Velocity seemed to be there though and he said he felt fine.

I read that his fastball was at 96. If the velocity is there, and he feels fine after the start, that's all that matters. Results are inconsequential until he gets back on a big-league mound.

And not even that until 2019.

Completely disagree. While team results may not matter until 2019, individual results for young developing players always matter.

Didn't look great again today in Charlotte. Four runs allowed, five hits, four walks in less than four innings.

Considering Rodon's abbreviated spring and more than two months on the DL, we need to give him a fair amount of leeway, even if a lack of command leaves him spinning his wheels in the second half of the season. The quality of his stuff and his ability to give 100+ pitches in every start without any unusual discomfort are going to be more important than his ERA, his WHIP, or his strikeout totals.

Agreed, I'm not expecting him to be a world beater right out of the gate, but that can't last for the next two years and then expect him to suddenly flip a switch for a winning team.

It's basically spring training for him. He needs at least two more starts.
