Default Hahn hints at Big Name FA signings in the future

Hahn said the team will have the resources and will compete for big name FA in the near future and name dropped the Albert Belle signing as a reference.

Nice read. I've thought for many months that the Sox will be very serious about landing Machado. It just makes too much sense with his position(s), age, rebuild timeline, and Sox financial flexibility.

If Machado signs elsewhere and Harper is still out there next offseason, I think he fits into Hahn's plans as well...

No team should be using a 22-year-old transaction as evidence to back up an assertion like this. The fact that the transaction in question was terminated after only two years because the team refused to cough up a $4.25 million raise divided over the final three years makes it even worse.

Ha, that's a good point. Hey, 22 years ago, we paid big money for a major free agent!

That all said, it's not like Hahn's making any revelations here. I thought it was assumed once the rebuild was happening in earnest that big FA signings would eventually happen. Or we could be the Pirates.

Encouraging to hear. Yes, we all agree that it's all meaningless talk until the Sox start landing some of these guys in a year or two, but I'm still encouraged nonetheless. Nothing we can do now anyway except wait and see what happens starting next winter.

One thing that the Sox likely have going for them is that they should be able to fill much of their position player and starting pitching needs internally with cheap, young talent like Kopech, Jimenez, Giolito, Moncada, etc. That makes it that much more plausible that they'll indeed go out and hand out a huge contract to at least one big-time FA since they probably won't need to build an entire lineup around a bunch of FAs.

Cub fans will claim they were 50% correct in their prediction about Harper and try to claim credit for him "coming to Chicago."

Honestly, I don't see anyone outbidding the Yankees for Harper. I think Boarass will get a call from Cashman where he will be told "tell me the best offer on the table, we'll add 10% to it. No matter what."

Love him or hate him, Hahn is so refreshing in his commentary. I got so sick of Kenny using the same nonsense all the time (they want a dollar, I have 50 cents!.... Championships!... Grinders!). He seems to shoot straight.

With Stanton and Judge though there too? You want your studs playing the field not 1 at DH and none of these guys can play CF.

Yankees just don't fit. Had they not had the sweetheart deal to acquire Stanton this offseason, then I say you are right. But, I think the Yankees took the sure bet in being able to get Stanton rather than take the risk that they could outbid everyone for Harper next offseason.

Albert Belle is 51. I question the wisdom of spending big money on a 51-year-old DH, even if he is better than Davidson.
