Why? Is he the most qualified candidate? I sincerely doubt it

Not enough information to really dig into, but this makes no sense on the surface.

If his career is over, sign him up as a goodwill ambassador. It's a great story.

If he wants to get into coaching, then I'm sure there are some HS or JUCO spots somewhere in the country to learn the craft.

I like the kid, and I'm happy he has a job with the team, but not this job with the team. You'd think this team has learned enough about hiring inexperienced former players to important positions.

Not a lot of information in the tweet. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that he won't be jumping in for Dotson anytime soon and will get a chance to apprentice under a more experienced person.

This front office has done everything to not earn that benefit.

To each their own. That's a purely subjective statement.

Can we lay off this particular former player hire?

Save the venom for when Tony Graffanino inevitably becomes the Sox manager.

Well, he is a well-liked ex-Sox player. So, I guess he's as qualified as anyone to be hired as a coach in this organization.

But snarkiness aside, I'm willing to wait to see what he's exactly been hired to do before making any serious objections.

No no no no no... YOU MUST CONDEMN SOX MANAGEMENT IMMEDIATELY NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO! It's simply unpossible that Farquhar could turn into a decent pitching coach without coaching little league first...

I’m not condemning the hire. I read elsewhere that Farquhar was viewed as among the more progressively analytically-inclined pitchers. If that’s true, perhaps his influence can help he Sox get more innovative in their use of spin rates and pitch tunneling, for instance.

But it does fit into a narrative that the Sox really prefer to hire former players as coaches/directors/coordinators, doesn’t it? And the timing of the announcement - on the afternoon trade deadline - at least smells a little bit like the public relations office wants a feel good story to help mute media criticism for their apparent lack of movement to improve the team (which I understand and don’t necessarily fault, but I get that many fans do).

Still, I’ll try to be positive. Maybe he can fix Alec Hansen and Carson Fulmer.

From some of the reactions here, you would think he was hired as the head of minor league instruction. He'll be a (lowercase, entry-level) minor league coach.
