Default Luis Robert declared Free agent and now he's a White Sox!

Luis Robert has been declared a free agent by MLB. He is able to sign anywhere under the current rules governing international free agents.

I think we were hoping this happened after July 2. Oh well, make it happen Rick.

Yup, but Sox still in the hunt regardless as long as they pay the rate/market. Which at this point shouldn't be an excuse since the payroll will bottom out soon.

Also working in favor here for the handful of teams in the hunt is that the usual big spenders are out of the running (Dodgers, Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees).

Sox should have the upper hand if they spend the money required for this.

How this plays out will be an interesting test of Rick's philosophy and if he's convinced the powers that be above him to embrace it.

We'll see.

Hopefully the work out scheduled for the Sox actually takes place next week (I think). Kid had to cancel the previous one because he got the flu.

Its easy to call for a rebuild when the actual rebuild puts more money in your pocket. Now lets see how serious the Sox are on actually putting a winner on the field, when money has to be taken out of the coffer.

I thought I had read that it was to the Sox advantage for him to be declared early, that it removed a variety of other teams from the bidding and put the Sox in the drivers seat. Perhaps I misunderstood the column but it seemed to me there was more competition after July 2 even if the price would be cheaper.

I thought it was the other way around...the later the better for the Sox since I think the new agreement on this goes into play June 15.

It he hadn't been declared by June 15th, it would have been better for the Sox because the terms of the new CBA start and a hard cap will be in place.

We'll see how much on board JR is with Hahn's plan. It'll cost us in terms of not being able to spend much in the international market the next couple of years but this signing would be worth it, IMO.

Agreed, Robert has huge upside and we really need to infuse the system with OF talent. If he can play CF, even better.

It's not like we've spent money on the international market anyways, what's the difference?
