Default Lucas Giolito Interview - FGraphs

Lucas Giolito on Striking a Balance Between Smart and Simple

Quote:
...when Im pitching I like to make it super simple. But things like spin rate and extension play a role in, How good is your stuff? What I especially looked at last year was usually, Im a big extension guy. On my fastball, Ill get seven-foot-whatever

I was looking at some numbers, and saw that I was down to six-foot-eight, six-nine, six-whatever. Thats not what I should be doing. Sure enough, video showed that I was flying open and yanking everything. So that stuff can be very helpful. Same thing with spin rate. Is the ball coming out of your hand at its best right now? It used to just be a feel thing, and now you can actually look at the numbers to back it up.
Shows how much work these kids put into their craft.

I have hope that Coop can get the best out this guy.

Despite the drop in velocity, there is still good talent there.

I think in Giolito, Kopech and Fulmer the Sox have three guys who are really driven to be the best and have the talent to back it up.

Kind of agree on the first 2. Fulmer has the drive, but I think hes a set up guy. Have not liked what I have seen at all since drafting him.

While his delivery does look a bit less jerky and as demonstrative than before, and while his control looks better, I'm still in general agreement with him being destined for the bullpen.

I haven't been able to see Giolito or Kopech pitch this spring, so I have to withhold judgment on them.

I think we have a lot of young arms who project as SP. Gio, Kop, Rodon (obviously), I think Lopez is going to stay in the Pen, I still like Adams, Hansen, so I am fine with Fulmer and Burdi possibly making a really good back end.
