He’s little more than a placeholder now.

With the logjam in the OF at Winston-Salem and Kannapolis, and Robert presumably joining Winston-Salem soon, someone may have to get promoted to Birmingham to make room. At the same time, when either Cordell or Tilson get called up to the Sox, Hawkins may get a “promotion” to Charlotte, but it wouldn’t be based on merit, but rather just because they still need him as a placeholder.

But though FRATER laughed openly, he wept secretly; and really he neither laughed nor wept. Nor did he mean what he said.

A top fifteen pick correct?

Yep. 13th overall. Another "toolsy" athlete so beloved by Kenny Williams. Good to see the current direction of drafting baseball players instead.

Notable picks after our toolsy OF...

Lucas Giolito - 16
Corey Seager - 18
Michael Wacha - 19
Marcus Stroman - 22
Lewis Brinson - 29
Jose Berrios - 32
Lance McCullers JR - 41 (he was ranked and could have been picked where we were easily)

I know it's always easy to look at who could have been in baseball drafts, because there really isn't a good way to determine if someone is going to be a major leaguer. Hawkins was an athlete with huge power. I wasn't completely upset at the pick, but I was really hoping we would take the shot on Giolito in that draft. Giolito was a consensus top pick I believe but had arm problems out of high school.

It would have been interesting to see what happened to Giolito if he had spent his entire minor league career with the Sox. I wanted them to grab him at 13 in that draft. If he hadn't gotten hurt, he would have been the first HS RHP to be chosen 1st overall.

Another Sox first round pick bites the dust. Since we picked Aaron Rowand in 1998, here's what the Sox brain trust picked through 2012 (when they were picked overall in parenthesis):
'99 - Jason Stumm (15)/Matt Ginter (22)
'00 - Joe Borchard (12)
'01 - Kris Honel (16)
'02 - Royce Ring (18)
'03 - Brian Anderson (15)
'04 - Josh Fields (18)/Tyler Lumsden (34)/Gio Gonzalez (38)
'05 - Lance Broadway (15)
'06 - Kyle McCulloch (29)
'07 - Aaron Poreda (25)
'08 - Gordon Beckham (8)
'09 - Jared Mitchell (23)
'10 - Chris Sale (13)
'11 - Keenyn Walker (47)
'12 - Courtney Hawkins (13)/Keon Barnum (48)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...nd_draft_picks

The Chris Sale pick was obviously a grand slam. Gio Gonzalez was a great pick, but unfortunately KW traded him away to Oakland for some magic beans. Other than that, a long list of garbage. And let's not pretend that it's because the Sox always picked very late in the first round during this period. Many of these duds ranged from overall pick 8 to 18.

The jury is still out on the first round picks from 2013 and on. The one with the best MLB track record so far is Carlos Rodon (3rd overall pick in '14), but we'll see if he can bounce back from shoulder surgery and stay healthy. Hopefully Tim Anderson (#17 overall in 2013) will turn out to be a dependable everyday SS. The #8 overall pick from 2015 isn't exactly doing that great right now.

Cubs should grab him up. He'd be an improvement over Schwarber.

Fair enough. That was a great trade of two teams' supposed garbage. Classic "Coop will fix him" pitcher.

Also, the Sox did draft Addison Reed 3rd round in 2010. We later traded him for Matt Davidson. The Sox also drafted Hector Santiago in the 30th round in '06. He pitched well for us and we were able to trade him for Adam Eaton who now has netted us Giolito, Lopez, and Dunning.

Still, that 14-year list of first round picks (other than Sale) makes me cringe.
