Default Tony Rizzo, Dirty Is As Dirty Does

Last year Tony Rizzo injured a catcher on tag play at home that the next day was ruled in violation of the rules. Rizzo received no league discipline.

Yesterday Tony was out at home on a force play. The catcher then steps in front of the plate giving Tony a clear path to the plate, even though Tony was out. Tony then takes out the unsuspecting Pirate catcher, again in clear violation of the rules.

Tony got away with a dirty play last year. Tony got away with a dirty play this year. Dirty is as dirty does. Tony Rizzo is a dirty ballplayer.

Why does he get away with it? First is because Tony plays for the Cubs. Second, because of his reputation, he's Saint Tony, face of the Cubs franchise, and one of the faces of MLB.

Imagine if a Pirates player had done that to the Cubs catcher. Or better yet, imagine if a Sox player did that to the Cubs catcher in the series two weeks ago. I think the media spin in both cases would be different.

Joe Maddon's hair would have been on fire. The cubbies probably would have cleared their bench. Definitely retaliation, which Joe is against, except when his team does it.

Imagine if a Pirate had done that to Contreras, who is a huge part of the Cubs' future as well as one of the top five hot dogs in MLB.

I was watching the game with my sister and brother-in-law who are both diehard and knowledgeable Cubs fans. It sparked a nice, lively discussion as I lobbied for the automatic double play as the catcher wasn't anywhere near the plate when Rizzo took him out.

As Clint Hurdle said about three or so times before he was tossed, "Bull(bleep). This is bull(bleep)."

But it's the Cubs and Rizzo, so everything and everyone are wonderful.

Somewhere Ty Cobb is beaming ear-to-ear.

MLB has said Rizzo's slide should have been ruled as interference:

Man, if the Brewers didnít keel over and die every time they played the Cubs, they might have been running away and hiding with this division by now. That 34-14 record against everyone else is eye-popping.

Any damn fool watching the replay could have told you that. At least MLB had the guts to admit it. Both teams gonna be warned before the game, so payback may be delayed.

Payback delayed does not mean payback denied.

Maddon doubling down on his assholiness:

Maddon said if Diaz makes a good throw and doesn't fall down "We aren't talking about this."

"The catcher has an option to get rid of the ball more quickly, get farther out in front of home plate, or just hold on to it. He could have done those three things also."

"It’s about technique, it’s about having a clock in your head, it’s about eyes in the back of your head. If you can’t do that, then don’t catch. Don’t play the position."

It’s too bad an opposing pitcher can’t plunk Maddon. “Just a little bit outside”.

When the ball is in play, the game moves quickly and gives you only a second or two to make decisions. Sorry players aren't robots.

I've hated Maddon since his Tampa Bay days. Cubs fans that I know probably think I hate Maddon because he's the Cubs manager, but I thought he was a first-rate horse's ass before he ever arrived in Chicago.

You can't really argue with his track record -- he's a successful MLB manager -- but it sickens me that so many people buy every line of bull**** that guy sells.
