Default Sox sign Grandal

Per Twitter to a four-year $73 million deal. Here's the tweet: https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/1197560310237999110

Daniel Palka has been DFA'd to make room on the 40-man roster.

That's a really nice move and good sign. Would have preferred a RF or DH since those are still holes, but this is great for the staff/young pitchers and also a nice sign that they aren't fully buying into McCann.

It is interesting coming on the heels of Mercedes addition to the 40. Gives 4 potential Cs which seems a lot IMO. Maybe a trade of one of the others in the works? Or a shift of Collins to fulltime 1B/DH?

This should put the narrative that the Sox won't spend money or sign highly sought free agents this offseason to rest. More importantly, they've secured the backstop for a period that should carry over into their contention window. And the experience and winning Grandal brings with him only can help.

This is such an under the radar move as well. Did anyone hear anything at all about Grandal even meeting with the White Sox?

Oh man I hope there is more to come. Great to see the front office wasting no time. This gives the team a ton of flexibility at catcher and DH.

RF, SP (hopefully 2), and some depth would be nice. Lots of time left this offseason.

It should, but it won't. We didn't even have to sign Grandal's brother-in- law to get this deal done!

Great signing if he can continue to be productive age 31-34. I imagine he and McCann will switch off between C and DH.

This is a nice two for one deal, since him and McCann can platoon, and have the other one DH. This was the appropriate time for the Sox to make a move. They sure worked quickly on this one.

I love this move. Switch-hitting catcher who takes his walks, has a history of being a good defender and has consistently produced. McCann played well, but now at least we won't have to worry if it was a career year from him.

Sign Stras or Wheeler and Castellanos and I will be ecstatic.

This must be a hoax because I've had it drilled into my head almost daily on WSI that the Sox will end up only signing third-rate stiffs this offseason.

Nightengale tweeted the Sox say this is only the start of an aggressive offseason in hopes of making a playoff push. Sounds like they're actually gonna back up their talk this year.
