It was obvious that Konerko was injured. At some point, he should not have been batting third. If you check his stats, you can make a strong case that he shouldn't have even been playing. Just about anyone would have produced more in the last three or so months. Dan Johnson was a real alternative, at least against righties.

I must admit I didn't think he was any better or worse than Konerko has been the last few years

He probably has about the same range as Konerko but he cannot handle balls in the dirt anywhere near as well as Konerko does. That being said, I think I saw him miss only two or three balls this year and I don't think any of them really came back to hurt the Sox.

I wonder what the recovery time would be as we don't know the extent of the problem. Looking over Paul's #'s since June, makes you wonder what if, especially if it was/is 1-2 month DL trip. Might have been worth it since his June/July/August were pitiful.

![]() He made 1 error in 50 games ( 440 chances) at first. That is adequate. |

Errors are not a good measure of a first baseman, because the throws he doesn't dig out of the dirt are charged to the player making the throw, not him. Who do you think Youk, Alexei, and Beckham like seeing at first, Paulie or Dunn?

I am not disputing that Paulie is better than Dunn. This goes without saying. Paulie is clearly the superior defender. However, Dunn came in with a reputation of being a butcher at 1B and he really wasn't. I wouldn't call Dunn a gold glove out there but can you really point to any games this season where Dunn's glove at 1B cost us the game? I can't remember a single one. If it means keeping Konerko more productive offensively all season, I'd take the slight downgrade on defense at 1B.

Here is the posting on the White Sox' Facebook page about today's surgery:

Paulie was really banged up this year with getting hit in the eye, having the bad wrist and getting banged up on a play at first base which resulted in a concussion. My guess is Paulie will still be productive for at least 2 more years as long as he stays healthy. I'm sure we will be seeing more of him at DH.
