Default Yankees refusing to pay Ellsbury after release

Looks like Kris Bryant won’t have the only high-profile grievance in MLB...

Filled with speculation; the worst kind of reporting which is all the norm these days.

We'll have to wait until the facts come out and sift through the chaff to find the wheat (truth).

That contract JE signed was something to behold. What were the Yankees thinking?

In any disputed situation that is headed for some kind of fact-finding, I like to wait for facts to come out. But that doesn't mean that people can't find the existence of the dispute or case itself newsworthy or interesting. I don't blame the media for not waiting for the resolution of every position that is to be litigated, arbitrated, tried, grieved etc. -- that can take quite a while, and then there are sometimes appeals. In the meantime the dispute (or alleged dispute, as it appears nothing has even been filed yet here) is itself news and can be reported in an appropriate way.

Reasonable minds can differ on what's an appropriate way, of course. But I have to be somewhere for Thanksgiving so I'm not getting into that debate!

It just seems like the relationship between the league and the MLBPA is getting more and more volatile with each passing year.

Well this will hinge on what the CBA says is appropriate for his rehab options and then how he followed those options. I wouldn't assume this is a league-wide issue. It's one guy who may or may not have broken protocol and now there is a dispute about whether that invalidates his contract.

If indeed he did something against the rules and that in turn led to him being out for an extended period of time with further injuries the Yankees have a valid point. Of course MLBPA is going to defend his contract - that's what they do, but I wouldn't make a huge issue out of this one dispute. The players are not going out on strike for Jacoby Ellsbury

The MLBPA is filing a grievance on behalf of Ellsbury. The point of contention is Ellsbury’s claim that the unauthorized medical treatment he received was for a non-baseball-related matter, thereby making club authorization unnecessary.
