Works for me.

Last offseason's big names were sucker bets that most teams knew better to ignore. However this offseason's acquisitions work out, management has been more concerned with building a team and winning games than making a splash that would boost season-ticket sales.

How long do the Sox have to clear a spot on the roster for Cishek?

They don't have to do anything until they announce the deal officially, and there's not really a timetable on that (other than opening day). They still haven't announced the Encarnacion signing, presumably because they're working on clearing some space on the 40-man via trade. This makes two spots they need to clear.

Were they not at 39?

Never mind. Didn’t count EE and subtracted Tayron.

Like the way Hahn has "club options" for a 2nd year on these one year deals- nice way to provide some insurance pending the development of Vaughn (EE) and a number of young pitchers (Gio, Cishek) along with 2 years of control for Mazera (Basabe, Adolfo, Rutherford)- he's setting up a nice "bridge" to 2021.

I think the bullpen still needs another power arm (I was really hoping for Hudson)- hopefully someone emerges in spring training.

Solid "A" for Mr. Hahn and his offseason work.

Re: Encarnacion - listened to James Fox of Future Sox as a guest on the Sox in the Basement podcast this morning. Supposedly Encarnacion may still be in the Dominican and hasn't come up to do the physical, etc. But you're right, they still need to clear a spot for him.

It wouldn't surprise me if Cishek is official before Encarnacion purely due to logistics as stated above.

I don't think you can give Hahn an A because he was unable to get a top of the rotation starter. But a solid B to B+ on everything else, and as far as I can tell an A for effort as well.

Encarnacion's father passed away recently, which is why I was surprised he signed with the Sox, so he might still have family stuff to tend to in the Dominican before he is officially announced.

So dinging him for being the highest bidder for Wheeler but not outbidding NYY for Cole and Nats for Strasberg?

I read that the other way. Giving him credit for being the highest bidder on Wheeler, but dinging him for failing to land any of the big 3.

Yea, I think that's fair. They had a plan, their first plan fell through and they moved on quickly to plan B. Kudos to the front office for doing that.
