Default White Sox nearing deal with E. Encarnacion

After further investigation, I think the title of the thread is misleading. Below are the most recent reports.

Bruce Levine

@MLBBruceLevine

The Wh Sox likely adding Edwin Encarnacion ( no deal in place yet) gives them another consistent 30 home run bat and experienced big game hitter.Option at first and DH . He is the firepower answer to Minnesota’s Nelson Cruz Short commitment win ,win on team and players sides.
The below report is probably a bit less reliable

Edwin Encarnacion nearing Deal w/ #WhiteSox that guarantees him in $10M+ range on 1 Yr deal potentially with ‘21 Club Option. Deal in similar format to one Twins gave Nelson Cruz last offseason w/ slightly less

. Expect deal finalized today or after Christmas..

Bruce Levine isn't that reliable of a source. He's the local Bob Nightengale, where sometimes he's right, but ultimately he's used as a mouthpiece for front office executives.

So he might be right about EE but I won't consider this all that serious unless someone more reliable backs it up.

Yeah, I'm more skeptical at this point. Apologies to the mods. I probably should have tossed this in the Hot Stove thread.

They are saying the same thing about the Sox and Castellanos. I think they are talking to both guys and letting them know the one with the best deal gets a contract.

Sounds like a shrewd negotiating tactic from a team that hasnít shown itself to be all that shrewd in negotiating with free agents...but if true, I like it!

Christmas present from the Sox?

If either of Encarnacion or Castellanos gets signed, our lineup will be pretty damn good. Something we haven't seen since 2006.

As long as we have some middle-of-the-order bat coming, I'm happy.

I would prefer Edwin, just because of the fact that it will likely be a 1 year deal only. I agree, it would make our line-up pretty fierce!!! Especially against lefties.

Robert
Moncada
Abreu
Encarnacion
Eloy
Grandal
Anderson
Mazara
Madrigal

Our 7,8,9 in that scenario is pretty darned good! The world series teams this year had the following 7,8,9:

Nationals: Zimmerman, Gomes, Robles
Astros: Correa, Chirinos, Reddick

I'd say our line-up would compete from 1-9 with both of those clubs if Moncada continues to improve, Anderson has as good of a year, and Robert/Madrigal are who we think they are. Plus, Eloy from Aug/Sep... Really good line-up!

Edwin Encarnacion is Spanish for Nelson Cruz. I'd love to see him in the Sox lineup and 1/$10 million sounds like a steal. I don't want to touch Castellanos who has not proven himself as anything other than a guy who had a good half season once.

Sign me up for that lineup! I don't like that EE is only a DH (or 1B?), but with a one-year deal, that doesn't hamstring this team if they want to go after another OF next offseason (such as Betts) and doesn't block Vaughn if he's considered ready in '21.

This leaves McCann and Collins out of the regular lineup, but Collins is far from a sure thing and McCann's potential for regression makes him a question mark.
