I think this pretty much ends their pursuit of a bat for DH. They have enough players to cover these 1B/DH at the moment. I expect Collins to get a lot of AB as DH this season since 70% of the AB will be against RHP.

That's a bit much in years, but I get it. They're overpaying the popular guy.

Wow. This seems unnecessary for sure. Would have way rather had him for just this season. Having $18mil locked up in an aging 1b 3 years from now in the heart of the WS window, doesn't give me a good feeling.

So essentially extended the QO a couple more years. Hopefully at declining salary. Not bad. Probably a slight overpay in the out year but there's value in his clubhouse impact and in keeping a lifetime, bleed-silver-and-black guy around. And I wouldn't think this hinders FA pursuit.

As voodoo said, they now likely have DH so just need SP (Wheeler, possibly add Nova or his ilk) and RF (Castellanos/Calhoun/Ozuna).

As long as they get the SP, I could be OK with an OF of Eloy-Robert (after May)-Engel. Strong D.

It's going to be interesting to see this Abreu/Grandal/Collins/Mercedes rotation at DH. Regardless of what they do it cannot possibly get worse than last year.

It breaks down to:
2020 - $11M plus $5M signing bonus
2021 - $16M
2022 - $18M ($4M of that deferred)
https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/...sion-white-sox

Question: what's the difference (if anything) in having $11M plus $5M signing bonus in 2020 instead of just a $16M salary for 2020?

Maybe an overpay, but if anyone has earned it from the organization, it's Jose. Glad he'll continue to suit up on the South Side for the foreseeable future.

So from a payroll impact it's $16-$16-$14. That seems fine. In terms of the difference between salary and bonus, I think it has to do with what potential suspension or other reason for nonpayment. If Abreu was suspended, he'd forfeit/lose whatever portion of salary for that time. But bonuses, having been paid already, would not be subject to that. There's also just a time value impact of getting a chunk upfront v spread over the year.

Less against the luxury tax cap I think, but we all know that will never come into play.

So I guess money now to do Christmas shopping.

Hope he uses some for Berlitz classes.

It's not ridiculous. The going rate is $10 million / 1 WAR and he does better than that stat-wise. Intangibles-wise he provides more. It's a slight overpay but the team can easily afford it.
