I was looking at a longer time frame and discounting the 1 great year from Ozuna; still, you're right that Eaton never came close to Ozuna's 2017.
I liked the trade then and I like it now.

The justification is a simple comparison of Marcell Ozuna's production in 2017 vs any year by Adam Eaton. Not even close.

Giants send back Denard Span, SS Christian Arroyo (ranked #82 MLB prospect) and 2 minor league pitchers.

Orioles closer Zach Britton is out four to six months after tearing his achilles during off season work outs.

That's not really a justification of dismissing WAR. You're defining "production" as what? Basic counting stats? That's fine to an extent, but baseball is not just what you see on the back of a 1970s baseball card. Defense and base running counts and often counts big in the outcome of games. WAR and other advanced metrics take factors such as those into account and tries to give a complete view of the player.

Wow, he's been the face of the Rays for a long time. I'm kind of surprised to see them trade him. More proof that anybody can be traded.

Dick Vitale (a Rays season ticket holder) is pretty pissed. He sent out a tweet saying fans aren't paying major league prices to see minor league players.

Wow.

And I thought the White Sox and Marlins' franchises were a mess.

C'mon Dick: Longoria is one guy and though it's early the return was not bad on paper.

I'm really upset that the Rays traded Longo, Tampa papers and fans aren't too happy either. I might be blowing things out of proportion but this could be the end of the Rays tenure in Tampa.

Did they ever have tenure in Tampa?

The Rays trading a now past-his-prime Longoria will end the franchise?

Pretty sure he didn't say it was the sole reason, but there is no denying the franchise has been on the downturn for a while now. They've now lost the face of their team, their stadium sucks, the location is bad, and they have zero hopes of competing in the AL East for the foreseeable future. Their fans aren't happy and I don't blame them one bit.

They've been around since 1998, so whatever you want to call their time in Tampa is fine with me.
