Congrats, Jose. There's no one on this team I'd rather have this honor given to.

Wish his numbers were better but maybe this is payback for last year. Congrats to him.

Well deserved, considering his overall career excellence.

Is this the first starting position player (in other words, first voted-in player) since '96? I think Buehrle, Loaiza and Sale were all AL starting pitchers.

That is a crazy stat considering how many all stars the team had in 2006!

Haven't seen Buster Olney and his expertise check in on this.

It's basically a popularity contest and the Sox score very low in the national consciousness since pretty much the end of the Golden Age 1951-1967.

Yup. But it's basically who the fans want to see play. I'm glad Abreu got in!

Good luck in the All Star game Jose. I'm hoping you get a hit or two while you're in the game. I suspect his first AB will be against Max Scherzer so you know that'll be a tough assignment, and just to make contact off Max is a moral victory. We'll be rooting for you Jose!!

PS. A good story on the "original" HR Derby in yesterday's Trib appeared. I have the box sets on this show on DVD, got them for Christmas a few years ago from my Brother and we watched several episodes of these together.

Abreu is batting 8th. Hopefully he can get a couple ABs.

If Jose Abreu starts in the all star game but the announcers spend all of his at-bats talking about Manny Machado and Aaron Judge, did it really happen?
