For those without a subscription, the most surprising pick from Fegan was Andrew Romine as the second backup IF (with the assumption that Leury and Mendick share 2B until Madrigal is up).

It will be interesting to see how we use that last spot, I see no reason for it not to be a pitcher, regardless of the new rule. Keep those arms fresh and separate the wheat from the chaff, there.

Ideally, Romine is nothing more than first man up from Charlotte, but I do see the need for that spare IF glove who you donít mind riding the pine all year.

Iím fine letting Leury and Mendick cover the diamond as frequent backups with a guy like Engel and Romine as defensive replacements.

Romine is not better defensively than any of the starters. He would only really need to be there in case of an emergency, and he would be off the team as soon as Madrigal is up.

I donít see the need to have a 9th reliever to start the season when there are more frequent off days and rainouts already. If not a backup IF, I think a third C/DH option (Collins or Mercedes) would be more useful. Frater I think had the idea of having Collins hang out around Grandal and McCann for the first couple weeks, before the AAA season has even started, which would be fine by me as long as heís sent down to play every day eventually.

I agree- probably 12 pitchers needed (unless we're trying to protect someone out of options for some reason) until we're out of April's off days and bad weather.

In that case- I like Collins as a 3rd catcher- nice to have tha insurance when Grandal or McCann are DHing- send him to Charlotte after a few weeks.

If Leury is the starting 2nd baseman to start the season- maybe a random 5th outfielder takes a spot until Madrigal gets called up?

With an outfield of Jimenez/Robert/(Mazara,Engel) and an infield of Moncada/Anderson/(Mendick,Garcia) there is no need to carry Romine even as a temporary, emergency backup. There's an extra outfielder and an extra infielder, and the extra infielder can play outfield in an emergency. If Renteria manages himself into a corner, that's a problem with Renteria.

I don't think Romine ever sees the 40-man roster, but in the event of an injury before Madrigal is called up, Romine can be with the team the next day.

The Feb. 24 spring training game is already showing up on my cable guide as an NBC Sports Chicago telecast. DVR is now set!
