There were questions about his ability to field the position since he was drafted. But he can still have plenty of value as a backup C/1B/DH that brings OBP and left-handed power, two things this team sorely needs.

He should be kept away from LHP though.

Collins is going to DH vs. RHP and McCann is going to DH vs LHP. It's not that hard really. The other backs up Grandal.

Isn't McCann arb eligible so under control for one more year? I have a strong suspicion we'll see a McCann/Grandal catching duo with some spot time there for Collins. Collins will get primary time splitting 1B/DH w Abreu. Still need an SP and a RF. If that ends up being Wheeler and Castellanos, this will have been an extremely successful offseason IMO.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Sox field offers for McCann (Instead of Collins) - might be able to get a middle relief type.

I do really like this move - Grandal is in consideration for the best catcher in the league. Finally going after the best!

This move confirms nothing about Collins. You're making assumptions.

Does signing Grandal cost the Sox a draft pick? I have a vague memory of reading something that said because Grandal received QOs in two consecutive years, signing him wouldn't cost a pick.

His start was too hot. His summer was too cold. And if his fall is indicative of who he really is that's not bad for a catcher.

His framing left a bit to be desired but from what I remember he was okay otherwise on defense. So a Gradndal/McCann tandem at the backstop is great.

All that said I donít hate the signing either as Yasmani Grandalís track Record is one of a winner. Heís caught some great Pitching Staffs through the years and is a proven solid every day Catcher. His age is somewhat of a concern, how much longer he can go, but I said the same thing when we signed Fisk. 😀

Can never have too many catchers. Play them all over the place if you have to. Plus it'll keep McCann on his toes, All-Star season be damned. It worked for NYY with Yogi, Elston, and Charlie Silvera, right?

Trading McCann for a middle relief pitcher would be a huge waste of upside.
