That became clear to me at Sox Fest. Makes sense.

I honestly think that was one of the reasons why FO extended him. They knew he could adequately fill a position for the foreseeable future but would also actively work to bring in more talent for the team. I can see him having a job in some capacity with the team for a long time.

Agreed - this looks like a good addition to the farm system. I can't find the link now, but I believe I read yesterday that Vera could be ranked similar to Thompson and Dalquist as far as Sox top prospects go.

Well, no stats and video.

He's a bust. Need to know 35 or 36 different stats on the guy. What was Hahn thinking?

Yep, that's what we learned in the Nick Madrigal thread.

That's how I see it. The Sox obviously view him as a valuable member of the team beyond the numbers he puts up.

Back in the 70's and 80's, when i was a commercial fisherman, we used to fish out of Key West, and there was a large Cuban population there then . i was greatly impressed by how the older male father figures were treated with such respect and honor . having grown up without a father, this had a large impact on me . that contract Abreu signed was so important to this team right now.

Some more info - scouts compare this to picking up an additional second round pick talent, very nice!

He is only being called the "Cuban Ohtani" because he is competent at pitching and hitting, but his skill set is not as high as Ohtani's.

I also think that signing Abreu will help the Sox extend the young core down the road. They see the organizational loyalty. They could have an issue giving any hometown discount to someone who kicked Abreu to the curb.

Iíve read teams much prefer Colas as an OFer with the Ohtani stuff being exactly as you said. Would be a great gamble, regardless.

Certainly no complaints from me about the White Sox becoming the default destination for Cuban players coming to MLB. The Sox need it, given how poor they are at identifying and signing talent from the rest of Latin America and how Japanese and Korean free agents seem to prefer to play on the west coast.

I'm not sure that it's a problem with identifying the talent as every team pretty much knows the big names in the Dominican etc. It's convincing them to sign with them over the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, etc. that's the problem. You have to wonder if an international draft is coming in the next CBA.

I know the owners pushed hard for it in the last CBA and the union was ready to agree to it, but players from Latin America currently in the big leagues objected strongly to it.

It's certainly been speculated that it's inevitable. I dont know how I feel about the prospects of a draft where players have already played professionally in other countries, though.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/mlb-team...aining-begins/

The White Sox are:

18th in overall payroll
4th in off season spending
6th in positive net payroll change

They're going to shoot up from 18th in the coming years, especially when it comes time to pay Giolito and Moncada. I'm guessing top 10 at some point. They'll never spend as much as the Yankees or the Cubs (because they don't have that sort of revenue) but there's no reason the team can't spend to keep their budding stars.
