Default White Sox (sign) SP Mike Pelfrey

File this under "warm body to pitch innings". With Rodon on the shelf and Quintana on the trade block, it makes sense to add a veteran to soak up some innings.

Yeah, I thought about Pelfrey the minute I heard the Tigers cut him loose. Makes sense for the Sox for this season.

Innings eater for the bridge between Quintana (or Shields) trade to when one of the prospects is ready.

Per Heyman, the deal is official and Pelfrey will report to Charlotte on a minor league deal.

Yeah, Pelfrey can also buy them some time if they feel Lopez, Fulmer, etc aren't yet ready for a mid-summer call up. I just don't want to be at the park on days he is pitching. Mike Pelfrey since 2013: 86 starts, 15-37, 4.97 ERA, 4.48 FIP, 1.593 WHIP, 5.0 K/9, 3.2 BB/9

Well, we'll see if he's someone that eventually gets 4-5 starts to see if he has anything left or if he can be a step up from innings eater and is a reclamation project that finishes put the season when Q is traded.

I seem to remember him being mentioned in trade rumors wayback for Freddy. Looks like Kenny always gets his guy ... again.

Was there any opt-out included in Pelfrey's deal? If not, then Pelfrey probably won't be up here until a pitcher goes on the DL. Swarzak throws harder, and they won't want to give Covey back to the A's until they get more of a look at him. The only other option would be to go with 13 pitchers, but I think they would wait for Rodon to return before going that route.

My main reaction to the signing: How serious is Carlos Rodon's injury?

I don't think this move would be necessary unless they were worried about Rodon.

Perhaps they were worried that someone else would sign Pelfrey before they got the chance.
