Hope he gets a good shot.
His issue has been his defense through the minors. He's always had a good bat. I agree it would be good to give him a shot and for now he's been playing other positions including a start at 3B last week, but no idea if that was for an emergency due to late scratch or something.

Quick note: all of the old AFL restrictions about the IL, level of competition, etc. have been lifted for 2019. They want to see if easing these restrictions will help improve the pitching side of things.

Despite his recent struggles, Luis Robert fever is not dying down. https://www.bardown.com/signed-card-...9dR2JCmUYQhjLI

I actually came away pretty depressed from this article. You have Corey Zangari talking about how previously the only information the team had was how hard a pitcher threw and his ERA and you have Alex Destino saying it's near the same level of information he got when he was playing in college. That suggests as an organization the Sox are way behind the curve on utilizing this data, certainly we're not on the same level as the Astros.

Having said that, so much of this stuff is proprietary and the public only knows a fraction of what is actually used, how it is used and who uses it well.

I have long believed that Hawk Harrelson - an outspoken opponent of analytics - since being hired by JR has had an outsized advisory role in informing and shaping the organization. Even after his failed stint at GM, Hawk consistently had been JRís most trusted adviser.

I think itís more than just coincidence that itís only been since Hawk completely retired that the Sox are starting to hire more analytically-informed coaches like Matt Lisle and even Danny Farquhar.

Okay anyone who was actually worried about Robert can relax. He's 4/4 after 5 iinnings tonight. With a triple a double a stolen base, 2 R and 2 RBI.

Robert walked in his fifth at-bat. He still has a slim chance at the cycle...this is the last inning and he would be fifth man up.

And Robert strikes out to ruin his perfect night. Still, 4-5 with a walk and a SB and 7 total bases is not too shabby.

Madrigal had four hits of his own, including a double. 23 hits for the Knights and there's still an out to go.

I still think that the trade market is small for first base only players, so his value the Sox may exceed his trade value given the trouble the Sox have had getting DH production since Thome retired. Indeed, a Vaughn/Sheets time share at 1B/DH could be cheap and productive.
I'm cautiously optimistic about Sheets. He's not a top 100 guy, but he hits well for average and is now starting to display the long-awaited power. If I'm not mistaken, I believe his K rate and his lefty/righty splits aren't too bad either. Given the Sox abysmal track record at acquiring veteran LH players to fill the 1B or DH spot (Dunn, LaRoche, Alonso) and that 1Bs don't seem to have a ton of trade value, we may be better off keeping him as a LH power bat in the lineup.

Since Thome "retired"? He didn't retire on us. Let's not forget the "we don't need Thome, we've got Kotsay/Jones" debacle of 2010....actually, maybe we should try to just forget that.

Gonzalez is coming on strong recently also. Think he's close to .350 over his last 10. Frost is also having a nice summer since June though he cooled off a bit before going on the IL.

Basabe is getting a lot of time off over the last week+ don't think he's 100% yet, but when he's playing he's producing.

All of these players are under 24. There is ample reason to feel that some of the guys at AA will advance to AAA and eventually MLB.

Yep. You’re right. My bad. I’ve actively tried to forget that NOT re-signing Thome was the first domino to fall in a disastrous set of DH decisions.
