This upcoming season? Any of the present members in our bullpen.

Once again, for the umpteenth time, the White Sox are treating 2018 as a rebuilding year. Rebuilding teams need to turn their David Robertsons into Blake Rutherfords every chance they get.

I'm very interested in seeing how Theo recovers a well depleted farm right now. If he does, despite not having his shortcut methods MLB has taken away from him, he'll have the Cubs in that group noted up there.

This is where the Sox want to be.
Perhaps “grinds to a halt” was a poor choice of words. What I meant was that the later draft picks and the smaller international bonuses will significantly reduce the expected value of future prospects. In addition, you will not be presented with many opportunities to sell major leaguers for big-time prospect returns. Now is the time to stockpile.

This has been debated to death and doesn't belong in a Machado thread.
That was one of the breaths of fresh air last season. For the first time in a long, long time, the Sox manager did not have his head up his ass.

I didn't agree with everything Renteria did, but at least I wasn't disagreeing with him daily, as I was with the previous couple managers.

Agreed. I'm excited about the developing young guys but there are going to be days when they take their lumps. Hopefully Giolito, Lopez, and Fulmer can use 2018 as a development year and come 2019 they are ready pitch solid games consistently. Kopech should be up by midseason would be my guess.

Still can't believe we have to watch Shields pitch again but at least after this season the Sox can buyout his contract for $2 million.

Excellent points.

The White Sox have to sign somebody for their bullpen. Not big name, big cost guys but somebody that can pitch somewhat consistently and bail their young starters out of trouble. It's gonna be a rough year and you definitely don't want to be tempted to over pitch your young guys. Hopefully they will also sign a starter but looking at the roster just now I fear they will go with Covey.

Right now, to me, the pitching staff looks like
Shields
Giolito
Lopez
Fulmer
Covey

Jones (maybe)
Minaya
Infante
Farquhar
Bummer
Fry
Vieira

There is not a single guy in that bullpen I trust to pitch well consistently throughout the season unless Jones stays healthy.

So yeah, give me a starter and 2 or 3 bullpen guys even if they are just Swarzak style reclamation projects.

And Swarzak worked out well: Cooper helped him, he pitched well, we dealt him for an interesting if tarnished prospect, and he just inked a multi-year deal.

Right, not all of them are going to work out but we need a few of those guys. The current pitching staff is downright scary.

It's Jan. 3! And the MVP was traded. I mean, things have happened.

I believe you meant to say “given away.”

This is a bad offseason for free agents. Teams are trying to save up for next year's offseason, which is absolutely loaded with talent. Look at the top 5 players:

Harper
Machado
Kershaw
Donaldson
Blackmon

These guys are gonna get paid.

And that is just the start...it should be crazy next offseason and I hope the Sox are in a great position to strike. If we need to fill out the lineup/ OF or rotation with some experience, and there are a crap load of relievers too that aren't listed below.

Brian Dozier (32)
Logan Forsythe (32)
Marwin Gonzalez (30)
Daniel Murphy (34)
Wilson Ramos (31)
Michael Brantley (32)
Adam Jones (33)
Andrew McCutchen (32)
A.J. Pollock (31)
Dallas Keuchel (31)
Gio Gonzalez (33)
Matt Harvey (30)
Drew Pomeranz (30)
Garrett Richards (31)
Adam Wainwright (37)
