Default Dan Palka

Does Palka fit in the rebuild? He's having himself a very nice season with 25 Homers and 62 RBIs, that's with only 373 ABs, give him 600 ABs and that would be on a pace for 40 homers and 99 RBIs.
If he's the real deal, looking down the road I wouldn't mind seeing him as the DH against righties, maybe even full-time DH. At this point I'm not sure what kind of trade value he has, would hate to trade him and then he turns out to be a consistant 30 homer/90 RBI guy. If we keep him and he does well that would free up $$$$ to spend elsewhere when we are ready to contend.

Some of those questions will play out naturally if he advances as a hitter then no reason to ump him, but will someone better come along?

Certainly no reason to rush into moving him.

I'm not sure if Palka is part of the plan for 2020 and beyond, but I suspect he will be given every opportunity in 2019 to audition for a role (either a power bat off the bench or part of a DH platoon) in 2020. He would greatly increase his value if he could play some first base. He's pretty awful in the outfield.

Let's not put blinders on and only focus on the big name prospects that keep getting mentioned as part of the future.

Right now, I think Palka has much of a future as anyone else in the organization.

As it stands right now, Palkaís OBP is too low to merit an everyday position, and the fact that he is a defensive liability does not help his case.

Palka and Davidson are fine as a DH platoon. If Abreu is traded to add more long-term talent, I guess they can DH Palka and play Davidson at 1B to see if either one can develop any ability to hit adequately against same-handed pitching. If they can stomach a defensive downgrade about 20 times next year, they also can play Davidson at 3B and sit Yolmer Sanchezís useless .521 OPS against LHP.

I also support going into 2019 with Davidson and Palka as the DH platoon.

Eloy becomes the LF; Engel is probably slated for CF; Abreu’s trade value is zilch so he’ll be the 1B; and Avi can return in RF.

That leaves Delmonico as the odd man out.

Is Eloy that bad in the field that you him slated as DH?

Oops, I meant LF.

Long term it would be awesome if so many OF prospects - Robert, Basabe, Rutherford/Adolfo/Gonzalez - blossom into stars that it ďforcesĒ Eloy to DH.

I'm good with Palka as long as he leaves his glove at home

No reason for Avi to return really.
They needed to move Abreu before, but as you said, trade value probably not there now.
I wouldn't platoon Palka and Davidson; both need to hit against both sides to learn to become complete hitters.
Palka's really broken out - no reason to put a bridle on him (and I would be okay with trading him too for the right price).

The thing is, Palka is a one tool player right now. That tool is loud, but a .790 OPS DH isnít going to cut it. He has to improve his hit tool and patience if he wants to make it.
