Default Scioscia leaving after season?...

Reports are coming out that Mike Scioscia will be leaving as manager of the Angels at the end of the year. He is one of the longest tenured managers / head coaches in pro sports today.

Not according to him:

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2...tep-end-season

Finishing his 19th year as the Angels skipper. Actually replaced Joe Maddon (interim the end of the previous year following Terry Collins's resignation), who he would hire back as an assistant until Maddon went to Tampa.

He and Bruce Bochy in SF are the only two managers currently in baseball who were not hired this decade (Bochy started in SF in 2006).

Dave Nightengale in USA Today, has a story out today (Monday) where he says Scioscia IS retiring at the end of the year, has no plans to ever manage again and wanted to keep this secret until the end of the season.

Amazing managerial career for a guy who had really bad radiation poisoning in the in the early 90's.

One of my favorite players/managers. I'll never forget him arguing this call in the 2005 ALCS GM 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Tn5CQ9vyYQ&t=40s

His teams the past 10 years seem to underachieve. The Angels consistently are making free agent splashes and consistently missing out on the postseason.

Scioscia might not be a great manager, but he's a good one, and miles better than any Sox manager since, oh, Torborg. Pity we won't get him.

BTW, I've been trying to keep an open mind on Renteria but the bunting and lefty-righty matchup craziness recall some of Ventura's worst habits. I do think the Sox are going to need to upgrade the manager position to make noise in the postseason.

That may be necessary but a potential manager move comes after the roster has stocked with championship calibre talent.

Joe McCarthy could not win with the current roster and the current crop of talent in the pipeline.

Yes. I heard that he had a problem demagnetizing credit cards following the incident. He also reportedly claimed that the radiation poisoning gave him superhuman managerial powers -- a great lemons to lemonade story.

I'd like to see Omar Vizquel named Manager. Joe Girardi would be my 2nd choice, and A.J. Pierzynski would be my 3rd option, but I'd like to see him get some Managerial experience at the Minor League level first.

Got to agree. He has done well with the WS Dash this year.
Just my .002, but "The Ricky Renteria Experience" should end after 2018.

Give Vizquel a chance. And if mgmt. decides to bring RR back, Vizquel should be a bench coach.I have a feeling Joe McEwing will get some managing offers this offseason.

Very hard to read on this one. You know about Sox loyalty and how highly Williams and Hahn have spoken about him. (Part of it is, of course, they hired him...if they fire him in essence it also calls into question their judgment.)

I mean they wouldn't can Ventura...so unless this team goes right down the toilet early next season I can't see it happening.

You have a better chance of him being named to Renteria's staff then becoming manager in the very near future.
