Default James Shields comment...

"Frankly I don't really care about the rebuild right now. I care about winning. They keep talking about rebuild and I'm trying to win ballgames right now, period. I don't like losing. We are losing ballgames right now." - James Shields.

I didn't see this posted but it brings up one of the main questions moving forward into the immediate future starting this off season for the organization / front office. Can they convince free agents, especially the good ones, to come to the Sox assuming the money offer is about the same among teams vying for their services?

We'll find out soon enough since not all of the prospects are going to make it. The law of averages just about guarantees that and there will be holes the Sox are going to have to fill from the outside.

James Shields knows he isn't going to be here when the rebuild is complete. Probably why he doesn't care about it.

If he'd pitched this well in 2016 things might have played out differently.

But I can see why a player his age isn't interested in a rebuilding team. I, personally, am interested in him rebuilding his trade value. That would be a win-win.

James Shields comments are irrelevant in the big picture. He's a guy who was very close to DFA if not for his current re-invention. I'm actually surprised his comments made a headline or why a microphone was even put in his face.

Now Abreu's comments the other day were a little more surprising because he's a guy that could matter and also he's a guy who once said he'd like to stick around for the rebuild. Looks like he's taking that back now.

With all that said, what veterans say here really won't matter at all if the young players don't start to perform. That's plain and simple. This rebuild doesn't work if every guy that comes up just ends up sucking or being plain average. That's what we have had so far with Lucas, Fulmer, Moncada, and Lopez. None have been spectacular to be seen as franchise changing pieces so far. I'll worry about Free Agency once I see a handful of these guys become that.

And let's also not freak out about players not wanting to come here. There are always plenty of B list Free Agents looking for a payday. Now the A list, you have to show you are a potential winner in order to get those assuming all money is equal. But you'd have to really convince me that JR would ever pay anyone $200 million in Free Agency. Let's get to $100 million first.

Largest contract in Sox history is 6 years and $68 million. That's pathetic.

Take this quiz, you'll learn a ton and maybe will put the Machado craziness to rest.

Any player who is actually playing the games on the field who doesn't feel the exact same way, I don't want them on the team now or once this rebuild kicks into high gear...

Lip Man you bring up a great point in that the White Sox organization is not an attractive destination for most. Sure we get B list players but top of the rung stars? No. I am sure that players talk and agents talk and the spin on this organization is not the best. Same goes for managers. What top of the line manager really wants to come here? Great point Lip..........and go Mendel!!!!

Exactly.

James Shields is saying the exact same thing that any other player on a rebuilding team would say. What major league starter takes the ball every fifth day and actively tries to lose games?

Has anyone else noticed that when Shields pitches, he doesn't ever seem to get run support? That's why he's only won one game this year despite pitching so much better.

In fairness no starters are getting much run support. This has been at best a sporadic offensive baseball team and for long stretches of the season downright bad.

I though Jose' got more than 68 million?

Regarding free agency, it starts this off season for this organization, already you can clearly see areas that need to be improved upon.

I'm still saying 2020 maybe 2021 but if they are this awful next year (with some of the kids on the big league roster) they are going to lose a significant portion of the fan base that has been supporting the rebuild.

They'll want to at least see some progress on the field.

Good. I'm glad Shields said it. I agree with him. I'm glad that he's been pitching better as of late, too.

To me this was the key phrase, "Frankly I don't really care about the rebuild right now. I care about winning."

Makes you wonder if Machado, Harper, Kimbrel et al will be saying the same thing this off season, assuming the Sox don't offer 30, 40, 50 million more than anybody else.

And as Love has pointed out correctly that hasn't happen in the past, maybe Albert Belle but that was a long time ago.

I've always said there's more to a free agent signing with someone than flat money...a lot of other factors enter into it.

We'll see what happens.

This is where a link to the source of this quote comes in handy. I'd love to see the entire exchange with the reporter to get the context.

This source blows. Starts right out with the quote, and none of the context.

All this said, I agree that I want every player on this team to care about winning every single day, regardless of the current talent.

Then those fans are dumb. We aren't even a full calendar year away from the Quintana trade. This rebuild is still in its infancy. The Sox will be bad again next year. They shouldn't be as bad as they have been this year, but they will still be bad. To think otherwise is foolish and shows a lack of understanding in how long this process takes.

Iíve been ambivalent about the rebuild, but Iíve always thought the anti-rebuild crowd had a legitimate concern about whether Sox fans in general were prepared to tough it out.
