Default Rick Helling impaled by a broken bat

Fortunately, Helling wasn't too seriously injured by the bat. It's fairly surprising that injuries like this don't occur more frequently.

Actually it has happened before.

In the mid 70's (I want to say around 74-75) Dodgers catcher Steve Yeager was swinging his bat in the on deck circle at Dodger Stadium when his teammate's bat exploded hitting a pitch.

A piece of the barrell lodged in his throat and it was a sizable piece. That rushed him off the field into the trainer's room where they were able to remove it. Fortunately all he had to get were a number of stiches.
