Default Bry Nelson

www.suntimes.com mentioned Bryant Nelson as a longshot candidate to challenge Willie this spring. Nelson is a career minor leaguer (brief ML debut with Boston) who had a terrific season for Charlotte last year. I saw him play for the Knights and thought he was the best hitter on the team after Reed -- good plate discipline and a solid line-drive stroke -- so I think he deserves a look-see despite being nearly 31. However, he doesn't play short, so I don't see him winning a job as a utility infielder.

This poor guy has had a very good minor league career and deserves a shot. His stolen bases are low and that has to be the knock on him. I thought the Sox were going to bring him up last Sep. On a side note: it's funny the Cubs of all teams never gave him a shot. I mean they bring up a good position player once every 10 years.

Nelson's a great guy, good teammate, has done nothing but be a professional where ever he has played from all I have heard. The front-office people in Charlotte were really hoping to see him up there last year as a late-season call-up. I'd love to see him get a legit shot at the job in Spring Training if the Sox can't get anything done with Iguchi...
