Apparently the Red Sox are talking to the Sox about Abreu.

I don't think they have the prospects to swing a deal.

You always have to stay open minded on what you can get in return- but I have two concerns about moving Abreu-
  1. He could play a very important role in the mentoring and development of Moncada and Robert, both are huge investments in this rebuild
  2. When we're ready to contend again- we'll need to supplement all of those young players with a "veteran leader", which will likely be through trade/FA- and will likely be a guy like Abreu (and we don't really have any premium prospects at 1B- unless Collins or Burger switch positions)

Beyond that- other than 1B and LH pitching, we have pretty good depth of young players/prospects in the outfield, RH pitching, up the middle, and if we're trading for a 3B prospect, that's kind of an indictment on our 1st round draft choice a few months ago.

Players that are an important part of the rebuild:
Anderson, Fulmer, Giolito, Lopez, Moncada
Players that might be or could have trade value:
Abreu, Bummer, Castillo, Davidson, Delmonico, A. Garcia, Jones, Sanchez

True, their farm system is the weakest its been in a long time. Not saying that it's barren, but they don't have the same high end guys that have been marching through their system for the past 4- 5 years.

Default Sox to sign Welington Castillo

Sox get W. Castillo for catcher.

Not too much to dislike about this as we don't have anything exciting at catcher until Collins comes up. Don't have the details on the deal yet.

Well, so much for my hoped-for Abreu trade target: Carson Kelly. (Kelly is ready to be somebody's regular catcher.)
