The Red Sox likely didn't value Brent Lillibridge much either but they were willing to take him to get $1 million of salary relief from Kevin Youkilis as well as open a spot for Will Middlebrooks. Teams do value dollars and open roster spaces for young guys. Fringe prospects do get moved for salary relief and potential valuable players. It happens every year. The Red Sox got a solid lefty in Matt Thornton from us for Brandon Jacobs just last season. Not every deal or trade cleans out your farm system.
