"El Cañón" (pronounced el cahn-YOHN), Spanish for "the Cannon."
Seems muy apropriado to me. Me gusta. |

Extremely stupid considering cannon in baseball has always meant arm strength.

Maybe The Cuban Monster will stick to Abreu better than it did to Viciedo.

Canyon, not cannon. Hawk is saying El Canon as in Jose has Grand Canyon power.

He has mentioned numerous times this year that Jose has "Grand Canyon power", so I'm positive that is what he means.
Personally I prefer his Cuban League nickname of El Oso (The Bear.) |

I like El Oso also and I bet the players are using that and will continue. Harrelson never uses a nickname unless he coins it. |

I'm partial to Big Bertha myself.

The Pirates' announcer's home run call is, "Clear the deck! Cannonball Comin'!"
Abreu's homers do look like they were shot from a cannon. FYI - cañón means both cannon and canyon (same spelling) so maybe it's a double meaning that Jose has Grand Canyon power with artillery explosiveness. |

I've been telling my friends he's a cyborg and the White Sox are probably gonna get in trouble when MLB finds out. Like those old ESPN commercials about Pujols being known as "the machine"...

Hilariously, this is Hawk's second attempt at calling a slugger "Grand Canyon" or "Canyon." He tried it for the first couple of years with Dunn.

Hawk so badly wanted to give the Grand Canyon nickname to Dunn in 2011 -- on the rare occasions Dunn did something good, offensively, that is.
