Default Semien to Charlotte

They just sent Semien to Charlotte, the corresponding move will be made tomorrow but I assume it's to activate Abreu.

Makes sense. Marcus needs to play more, and with Ramirez, Gilllaspie and Beckham all playing well, there aren't many ABs for him with the Sox.

I don't disagree with this move to give him more regular time. Chances are he'll be back up at the end of the year at the latest if not before if we make a trade. If he is playing well in AAA, that could mean the Sox give a longer look at trading Beckham.

I hope he gets outfield time in the minors.

Agree that Marcus needs more ABs and OF time. The only negative is that De Aza is still taking ABs from someone - anyone - else in the organization.

The good news is that no one is going on to the disabled list to replace Abreu on the disabled list.

The most notable thing about this move is that Semien is popular with fans. At the beginning of the season, a great many fans wanted him to be better than Beckham. He wasn't, but he got a few big hits, and he's played a major role in some big wins. There could have been a move popular move, but I think this was a better move for both Semien and the team.

What would have been the popular move?

Cutting De Aza and sending Garcia to Charlotte come to mind.

Creates a logjam in the Charlotte infield with Johnson, Sanchez and Davidson. Could this be the start of the Mica Johnson move to left field when he comes off the DL?

Reading between the lines of some of Hahn's comments- I think they wanted to give Micah the chance to "adjust" to AAA before asking him to change positions.

I assume Davidson is a fixture at 3rd, Sanchez is the SS, and Semian becomes the 2nd baseman- so it could be time to move Micah to LF or (when he comes off DL at AAA)- get Semian out there and prepare his future as a "super sub"-

When we have another big league bat at the position, then he'll be taking ABs from someone.

Despite his poor season, I'd prefer De Aza to a minor leaguer in over his head or an infielder playing out of position.

I wonder what happens if Gillaspie is the real deal.

I've had the same thought. He's only 26 and is a former 1st round pick. He's obviously not going to hit .350, but maybe the light went on for him. At worst, he gives the Sox the luxury of not having to rush Davidson.

Conor is the real deal...that stroke does not lie.

He is part of a future rotation at third base with Davidson.
He can also play 1st base in a pinch.

Conor G. is solid, and should be around for awhile.
Once Davidson shows he can hit rightys, then maybe Conor goes to 1st base and Abreu is DH.

As for Semian, I like having him go down and work on his batting average and outfielding....holding pattern until July, when the Sox may be dealing middle infielders.

I have a feeling that with Paulie and Dunn gone after this year Viciedo will become the DH and Micah Johnson will be groomed to take over LF
