After dealing Prince this off-season and failing to reach an agreement with Scherzer, Detroit went ahead and locked up Miguel Cabrera, possibly for the rest of his playing career.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-bi...221304287.html Cabrera was under contract until the end of the 2015 season. No terms released yet, but they are expected to be enormous. 7 years, $30 M AAV is being thrown around in the Twitterverse.

ESPN is reporting 10 years, roughly 300 million. Cabrera turns 31 next month. This should be another one of those deals that works out well for them for 3-4 years.

They are not going to regret this at all in five years, maximum.

I can't even begin to imagine the contract Trout's gonna get.

Trout may very well be the first 1/2 billion dollar contract.

I hope they go all in on Sherzer too so they handcuffed even more for the future.
They have a depleted farm also. |

Yeah not sure why anyone would be smiling that the most dangerous hitter in the game is locked up for the long term.
Will they regret it in 5 years? Maybe Will they regret it in 5 years if they win a WS? Not likely.

Doesn't defend being wreckless.
With Cabrera being signed for 2 seasons more, why even expose yourself to something you didn't need to do right now? By the look of it, what "avoid free agency" discount did Cabrera give back to the Tigers in this deal? Another example of a stupid team bidding against themselves. Good for the Sox. |

Cabrera is their guy for 2 more seasons. I'm of the mentality you suck all the juice you can right now for a guy under an already hefty contract and deal with Free Agency when the time comes. There is a good chance Cabrera's peak years are his next 2-4, why expose yourself to 6 more on top of that. The Chris Sale signing is the only type of "looking ahead" signing that makes sense these days. The Trout idea was also sounding good up until the $200 million + number being thrown out there. With club control for 3 more seasons, why go so high on the FA buyout? |

That's one way to guarantee a great pinch hitter in 6 years.
