Reading the Giants message board it seems like it was a mistake letting him go for nothing.

Surkamp is actually a nice garbage heap pickup.

Looks like he had some potential before getting injured.

I do like how Hahn is generating some competition for areas that are relatively "barren"- so this guy is competition for Veal, etc.- like Nieto provides competition for Phegley/Flowers-

I was going to use dumpster diving move but yes I totally agree. To get a 26 yr old lefty starter that was highly regarded coming off of tommy john surgery for nothing is one fine pick up.

He's a starter.

Dumpster diving and garbage heap are such ugly terms. I prefer bottom feeding.

Meh, low blow. He was better than a lot of experiments there. If his back wasn't bad, he'd be a solid defensive 3Bman off the bench with a little bit of power.

The only thing I didn't like about Morel was the organization and Hawk telling the fans how he was going to develop into Joe Crede.

He essentially did develop into Crede. He just skipped the World Series parade and went straight to the bad back. I feel bad for the guy because guys like Beckham can suck out loud and at least you know what you have. Morel might never find out what he could have been, and that's a shame.

Giants fans actually hold him in higher regard than they did Aaron Rowand, at the end, anyway.

Fans tend to place a high value on expectations, and Surkamp didn't have the opportunity not to live up to his expectations, having pitched in the majors only as a future prospect who averaged 10 strikeouts per nine innings in the minors. There was a time when Barry Zito was immensely popular on the Giants and Adam Dunn was immensely popular with the White Sox, but that was before they didn't live up to their expectations. Even if Robinson Cano has a good career with the Mariners, he likely will never be as popular with their fans as he is right now.

The White Sox don't have any hype attached to Surkamp, so he's going to have to show something to get the love.
