The point is that the Sox are obviously not trying to get better so it's frustrating.

Until we can finally end the debacle of the Dunn era- PK should be the DH vs. LHPs- as bad a year as he had in 2013- these were his stats vs. lefties-

.313 BA
.398 OBP
.525 SLG
.923 OPS

Dunn vs. LHPs:

.197 BA
.296 OBP
.385 SLG
.681 OPS

If we can trade/dump Dunn- then he's full time DH for his final year

Who knows Paul may morph into a Smoky Burgess role. There should be many opportunities for a pinch hitter with the lineup the Sox will have.

Yes, because that situation isn't correctable. They have said he's coming back. So we have a manager who wasn't qualified for the job in the first place and showed in 2 years he's way, way over his head.
The Sox still have time to make moves and deals to address personnel issues. But now they bring back Konerko, when he fills no need at all, furthers my position that the 2014 season will be punted and devoted to young players and development. And I hope that's their intent - because if they actually are trying to win, yet keep Ventura and sign Konerko, then we're in trouble.

Konerko will turn 45 in 2021. He can start drawing his MLB pension at 45, as I understand it. It looks like what he did was sign a financially sensible contract if he wants to retire to his home in Scottsdale.

I expect that on the field, especially knowing it's his last season, he will have a better season than 2013. He was having an outstanding 2012 before the injuries and he seemed to be playing hurt most of last season. He is a smart hitter, and I don't know that he would want to come back if he didn't feel he couldn't do it physically after 2013.

The annual $1 million installments were part of his deal he signed before the 2011 season, they're not new to this 1-year contract.

The additions of Garcia and Abreau would suggest otherwise. It's unrealistic to think that they can fix everything this offseason. I don't think this move is the worst thing in the world. It's not like we are counting on him to be the savior.

There's no reason to be upset, but some people have to be upset in order to post. We weren't competing in 2014, not without some miracle trades and some huge $$$ thrown around. Getting upset over this move is ridiculous.

In misreading it the contract terms, I failed to give Konerko credit for establishing a financially secure retirement three years ago. That also makes his 2013 contract less about the money and more about playing one more season.

I'm pretty sure Paulie's financial security was established many years ago. All this money is just for the future generations of Konkerkos.

Hopefully, a couple of the four 1b/dh on the roster can hit like it.

While I'm not happy with clogging up the roster spot with a DH type, it's not like a it's a high $$ deal. And if Konerko can bounce back and play mostly against LHP, it could turn out to be (gasp) good for the team.

And if Dunn plays just against RHP (28HR, .762 OPS last year) it could increase his value before the trade deadline as well.

You would think so with the multimillion-dollar salaries. But there are athletes and celebrities who spend it as they get it, who want their money up front so they can spend it and who continue to spend it when they aren't making money anymore. A few years ago, I heard of a former major leaguer who was working at his local Wal-Mart despite having earned more than $1 million in his last four seasons.

It's just nice to see evidence that Paul Konerko is more grounded.
