The salary offer to a player under team control may not be less than 80% of the player's total compensation from the prior year, and may not be less than 70% of his compensation from 2 years earlier.
Oh...well in that case, he's almost assuredly going to opt out.

I don't believe I've ever seen that before in a deal. On the positive side, Abreu seems to have put in a financial incentive to produce. But how it will work out remains to be seen.
Agree on all points, this is what I was trying to say but much more cumbersomely.

Not necessarily. If his performance doesn't warrant better than 10 mil a year the Sox don't have to offer him arbitration. He could risk losing a lot of money.

His 2014, 2015, and 2016 MVP awards disagree with you.

$10 million on the market in baseball now, let alone in three years, doesn't equate to all that much production. I want to say that 1 win (WAR) is worth about $6 million. Even Alexei was a 2.3 oWAR player in 2013 (I'm guessing Abreu won't provide much if any worth on defense).

Also possible the Sox and Abreu agree to a restructured contract/extension that buys out his arb years

Haha...well, yeah. Anything is possible. I think, after reading everything, three years of high value arbitration is the most most likely scenario. Which is fine. He's supposed to be here. The team is planning on it.

I'm actually looking forward to the 2014 championship season. Can't wait to see Abreu hit bombs out of the Cell with ease.

Abreu and Garcia could be quite a young dynamic duo on the South Side for many years. I just hope we can surround them in the lineup with quality players.

With these 2 the Sox are going 90 games easy.
