The Yankees are looking at AJ and I could see 2 Year 15 million dollar deal. You could sign a Molina and maybe a Gerald Laird for 1.5 million each with a club option. I know they need offense, but the defense behind the plate was horrible. Sad thing is, Molina and Laird would be an upgrade over Flowers and Phlegly at the plate as well.
Ah...but veteran defensive catchers will assuredly find backup roles for contenders, usually for decent money too. I don't think it's likely we'd pick up a Jose Molina type unless we're offering both more money and multiple years, and that would just be stupid.

Unless the money spent on the stopgap prevents them from signing or drafting a long-term piece that they really want, why does it matter if they spend 5 million on AJ vs. 1.5 million on Geovanny Soto? If AJ's handling of the young pitchers accelerates their development in any way, it will be 3.5 million well spent.

I think Phegley could be decent given a few years as back up under his belt.

Because it's $3.5 million. Do we know how good/bad Soto or any other bum like Buck is at handling young pitchers?

The Cubs signed Navarro and the Mariners signed Shoppach, both to one year deals, so who knows?

I'd like to see AJ as our next MGR or take over for Hawk.

AJ as the next manager would be EXACTLY the kind of thing this organization would do to possibly continue the ruin they have created. In the booth? No problem - I don't care if they just put a gorilla up there.

AJ is one of the smartest players in the game. He also knows how to handle a pitching staff. I believe he would make a great MGR

I'm not going to delve back into the Venturas argument, so [insert my Ventura argument]. Let AJ coach/manage in the minors first, or be a bench coach first. Then we'll talk.

AJ's relationship with pitchers was one of the major reasons he didn't play for the Sox last year. Pitchers have never liked throwing to AJ.

Phegley will be a solid catcher, given more time.

AJ would have been helpful in the lineup, his bat is legit, and the Sox have so few high average hitters he stood out like a sore thumb, but not sure he makes sense now.

It's astounding the baseless notion that continues to float around about Phegley becoming a solid player. He was never supposed to be, the guy was routinely dismissed by scouts and had what amount to half a season of good AAA at an advanced age before bombing as expected at the major league level. There shouldn't be any talk about Phegley producing anytime soon, and even then it should be as a 30 start a year backup/3rd catcher that floats between levels.

This may be the only thing that would make me switch my allegiance to another team.
