No, no, no, no, and no.
Let it go already, folks.

No, he said what joining a contender is valued at was over-emphasized. I contended that that's exactly what AJ did; he took the most money he could from a team that would contend. Which he will likely do again.

I rather see the Sox go after Carlos Ruiz.
He's very underrated, doesn't strikeout a lot and has a very good fielding percentage. Then go after Shin-Soo Choo. I'm sure the reports that the Yankees want Choo is all hype by Boras to spark more interest and jack up the $$$$

No, I countered his point with the fact that Texas was a contender and that's why AJ signed there because Texas, at the time, was the ultimate "contender" team. There was no twisting whatsoever.

Good Lord...he never said Texas wasn't a contender, and that AJ took the most lucrative offer for his services. Was there a team that offered him more $$$?

Now you're twisting. The only fact is that AJ signed with a contender. If you're going to make the point that contending didn't matter that much (like the OP did), it needs to be backed up by something.

This is dependent upon what the Sox do with other black holes in the lineup, and, more importantly, whether they intend to contend in 2014 or not. I would agree that Flowers/Phegley is not the answer, but trades and other FAs could net something else. Also, depending on the rest, again, we could just have a C bat ninth. We'll see. If they do not intend to field a contender next season, a one-year deal for a catcher who will cost a bit more than you want to pay to fill a hole in a lineup that will still be bad isn't the way to go.
My point being that some see "AJ is a free agent!" and immediately think that is the answer. |

Fact: He signed with a contender. Fact: he signed a one year deal for $7 Mil Seems to be more than one fact there if I'm not mistaken. Also, I haven't made a point. I asked a question. I'd be interested in knowing if someone offered him more money. The only fact for me is, I don't know for sure why AJ signed with Texas, and neither do you. Maybe it was because they were a contender. Maybe it was for the money. I haven't had the chance to ask him. |

I don't know about AJ but Flowers hit .196 and was horrible behind the plate and Phegley hit .206 and was less horrible behind the plate.
Basically the Sox need to bring in 2 new catchers. |

Agreed, if they have no interest in contending. If contending, signing a guy like one of these for backup is OK, too.
