Not too many teams need a 1B/DH type, at least among the teams that could afford to spend this kind of money on an international signing.

I barely know what to think, but I don't think I'd be upset to see it happen.

If you hit it big on one of these guys (think Cespedes/Puig), you signed a star. If you don't, you signed Dayan Viciedo.

Is it a good thing to sign another Viciedo? I wouldn't shed a tear if we lost the Viciedo we have.

Oh, it would not be a good thing to sign another Viciedo-type at that price.

As for trying to find another Puig-type though - I think it's worth the risk. I mean, in his last Cuban season he hit .453 with 33 home runs and 93 RBIs in 66 games. Those are ridiculous numbers wherever you play.

Abreu is supposed to be a Viciedo-type with a plus bat for both average and power (7/8 in scout speak) and would have a much higher ceiling than Viciedo, who's only quality attribute is power. Plus he's 26 (if you can believe any Cuban players' age) and could step into the big leagues right away.

Looks like a smart move if the Sox land him.

I wonder if money is not the only factor here. The Sox have two fellow Cubans on the club already (Tank, Alexei) so there is certainly a comfort factor coming to Chicago. Guys who have been through the transition from Cuba to America that could help him out are already in place. Of course the dollars do most of the talking but if the White Sox offer is the same as one or two other teams, the comfort level could tip the scales towards us.

A strong sign Dunn or more likely Konerko aren't part of the plan for 2014.

I think Jose Contreras and El Duque's good experiences with the Sox could also play into this....Sox are a good place for Cubans!

Sign him. Sox need some power next year...the park is not changing and homers win at Sox park.

I don't think Konerko is likely for 2014 whether they sign Abreu or not.

I like that the White Sox continue to be a destination for new Cuban talent.

Word is that we're going to sign him. He was down to us, the Astros, and Boston. The Astros appear to be under-bidding and the Red Sox have said they don't expect to sign him...

No one can say the Sox aren't trying or spending. I applaud them solely on that. Now I hope this guy can play.
