It is on here, you would think the Sox actually made the playoffs the way people talk about it. 85 wins to a top notch organization is a bad season. If that's something to brag about it escaped me.

Look at the career records of the managers in the HOF, and name one that didn't have some tough seasons. Then look at the Sox roster and explain how anyone could judge how good a manager is by this particular team's record. None of the guys on your list would have managed this team to contention.
Connie Mack tore down the A's many times because of financial reasons. He would build the team up to a champion then go Florida Marlin and get rid of everybody. I would bet that Connie Mack fielding turnaround was after one of those purges. Notice he won 5 WS titles but had a far below .500 lifetime managing record.

If the Sox somehow are within shouting range of contention next Labor Day, do you want RV calling the shots down the stretch?

If he answer is no, he shouldn't be calling the shots at all.

And yes, I realize the Sox could be screaming bloody murder next Sept and only the Twins will be able to hear them.

The Sox' ability to feed that line of BS to their fans for years obviously has been eaten up by even some of the most dedicated of us.

Because we want to believe and because it was easier for them to pull it off after they actually won a WS.

Ventura's batting orders are bad, his use of pitchers is bad, the fundamentals are poor, his strategy is poor. He's a bad manager. And even if you don't agree with me on the details, 63-99 with a starting staff that's pretty good stands tall. Yea, we aren't going to contend next year.
But some of the most memorable seasons were of non-contending teams. Some guys can't stop crowing about 77. I for one, as a kid, enjoyed 71 thoroughly. We had a fresh team, a fresh approach. Tanner was new (he managed 15 games in 1970), we got rid of dead wood, and moved some decent players out and brought new ones in.
It was a fun season and we improved 23 games.
Hahn or Williams or whoever is calling the shots seems to want to keep this same ethic and culture that we've had for a decade, and which completely deteriorated in 2013.

It's because the watered-down postseason has made mid to upper 80s a decent season. Remember, the year we won 85, the team that won the entire American League won 88. Another 88-game winner was 1 win away from the World Series in the National League.

This isn't the 1950s anymore, you don't need to build one of the 2-3 best teams in baseball any more. You just need to be the least ****ty team in your ****ty division and then who knows what happens.
