Outside of Hawk being blind with handing him the captain patch for the future, how could this guy even be your starter next season?
Hits for no power and look at now, back to reality with a .260 avg. His glove is also very overrated (again Hawk) and his throwing is starting to remind me of Chuck Knoblauch. I know this team has plenty of wholes, but 2B might be a good place to start. |

Beckham stinks, no doubt, but unfortunately, the Sox need an upgrade at, at least, 6 or 7 positions so Beckham remains one of the team's least pressing problems. But hopefully one of the young middle infielders pushing up through the system, be it Semien, Sanchez, or Micah Johnson, will force him out, because yeah, he's bad at baseball.

Yeah of all the changes that need to be made, Beckham seems like one of the lower priorities. To me, #1 is catcher.

In an ideal lineup, Beckham is hitting 9th and providing adequate defense, like a Mark Ellis type.

Beckham shows what a horrendous situation the Sox are in the near future. I'm sure hes still considered a position player to build around because there really is no one out there to be considered a building block except A. Garcia. With a pittance of worth on the club and minors to trade for all the holes to be filled, this year may look not so bad compared to next. At this point hes a keeper as long as they dont extend his contract.

OMG! From watching today's game, I just realized that Josh Phegley has the same number of RBI as Beckham!!!!!! That is ridiculous. .

Not sure if you can use this season as an accurate assessment of his power considering he came back (very quickly) from a wrist injury that affects his power.
Otherwise this is a tedious argument to have. He's cheap, he's an above average defender, and he can get on hot streaks that can help carry a team. And I do think he has the makeup of a good team leader. Pencil me in as in agreement with the Hawkeroo.

If you have a better solution (and I don't mean a generic reply of "Find someone better"), lets hear it. Give us a name. Who's the answer?

And of the two, Phegley has a lot more upside, IMO.

When he is hitting it right (a good chunk of this season, his rookie year) he sprays line shots all over the field. He's on base scoring, getting guys from 1st to third. That can help carry a team. He can't carry a team in the same way a Carlos Quentin could. |
