Default Sox will have at least 55M extra cash

For this off season.

25M for the new TV deal

Players coming off the books
Konerko
Thornton
Floyd
Crain
Wise

Hopefully the Sox are able to trade Peavy, Dunn, Danks, Keppinger, Rios, and Alexei.

This would be great news to me if I were one of Jerry's kids.

That extra money is not going to go towards free agents. I bet the Sox are going to try and get the payroll under $80,000,000 which they haven't been since 2005.

It will also put them in-line with payrolls like Cleveland, Oakland, San Diego, Colorado & Tampa.

I think Viciedo is done, too.

Cots shows contract obligations going down to $76 million in 2014. Now that doesn't account for arbitration settlements and just filing out the roster with minimum salary guys, but there is still a lot of running room here.

Don't think agents haven't figured in the new TV contracts themselves. Wait and see what the total salaries go up by in 2014 across the league and see how much of the TV revenue stays with the owners. More alarming for the Sox is what happens to other teams local TV revenues, while we wait for our deals come up for renegotiations ( with ourselves in the CSN case) years from now. That's where the real competitive disadvantage is really going to show.

You don't have to be Miss Cleo to predict a huge turnover in season ticket renewals this year with many season ticket holders not renewing. That will definitely cause a reduction in payroll. $80 million is a good estimate for next years payroll.

By my count, the only players eligible for arb next year will be Beckham and DeAza, unless I missed something. They are both currently slightly above 2.5 million. I could see the Sox dumping DeAza and Beckham getting a bit of a bump. I could be wrong, but I don't see it having too much of an impact maybe a million or two if they keep DeAza.

Casper Wells is arb eligible next year, too, if the Sox have any plans to bring him back

Troncoso, Flowers & Morel, too. Although I can't imagine any of them making much more than the minimum.

I hope Wells, DeAza, Troncoso and Flowers aren't part of the Sox next season.

Hm, interesting, B-R shows Flowers and Morel being Arb-1 eligible in 2015.

Great, we're becoming the next Pittsburgh Pirates, pre 2012.

I don't know what that means as far as the future for this team, especially considering the direction, or lack thereof, it's in, but I guess that's cool. If it allows to invest in making us better now or in the future, I'm all for it.

I'm not sure this is the right way to look at it (especially the additional revenue piece, there's no guarantee it wouldn't already be earmarked for something). Ticket revenue has got to be beyond low this year and season ticket sales after a season like we're having are going to be incredibly low next year (at least compared to recent history). Yeah, money is coming off the books. But so is revenue.

Thornton had a club option; think they'll exercise it for a potential trade? He may not be worth $6 mil to anyone, but then again, someone paid Marmol $10 mil.
