Peter Gammons was filling in tonight as the color man for Red Sox/Rays. Red Sox have a closer issue. Andrew Bailey entered in a 1-0 save opportunity in the 9th and gave up a home run to tie the game.
Gammons said the Red Sox may need a closer at the trade deadline. He mentioned Jesse Crane as a guy the Red Sox and Tigers may go after. |

Yes, but a crane will be needed to rebuild this team.

Crain could be a bullpen difference maker for a lot of teams. I suspect Hahn will field calls from more than just the Red Sox and Tigers.

This Crane guy sounds interesting. Please tell me more about him.

He played Colonel Robert Hogan on Hogan's Heroes. He was quite a character in real life when the cameras were still on, but it ultimately led to his demise in an Arizona motel.

True. If the players were dropped from the crane, they'd have to be replaced.

Auto Focus was a wild movie. Highly recommend.

Maybe so but when push comes to shove, I would prefer that Crain go to Boston instead of Detroit. With that said, let the bidding begin!

Funny, isn't it, that two blown saves in June can sound such panic alarms?
Crain is actually a good trade candidate because he is doing so well this season, and he is off to free agency. He doesn't have any saves this year, but I imagine teams would look at him and say he could save games if used with a close lead in the ninth. He does have four career saves. I imagine teams would like to have him. I'm not sure what his value would be, but it's probably the highest among relievers on the Sox staff. He has never pitched as much as 80 innings in a season. Small injuries have played a part, contributing to his downtime. Even if he stays healthy, he may only have 50 good innings left in him this year. Teams probably aren't going to go beyond the talent they believe 40 or 50 good set-up innings are worth. He might garner a good prospect. But I'm guessing that if Crain is traded, the result will have fans and the media complaining that management are idiots because they didn't get more. |

At least Crain has some nice trade value. The Cardinals could also use him for the stretch run. For the first time in a while, Rick might actually have some leverage.
