Default Buster Posey Gets a Raise

Posey Signs New Deal With Giants

Not quite what Verlander's getting, but a nice deal for one of the best young players in the game. I do wonder how much longer he'll catch, as there's no DH in the National League where he can be hidden when he needs a day off.

That's a lot of money for a catcher.

He plays first base on his day off. He was a shortstop at Florida State, but he really isn't a very good defensive first baseman

The thing is, he has played only one full major league season, starting his Rookie of the Year season in the minors, and he has an MVP award and was behind the plate for the last out in two World Series clinching games. The Giants had never won a World Series title in San Francisco, so that's fairly awesome.

Any time you sign a player to an extension it is a gamble. It's not as big a gamble for position players as is for a pitcher, though. It also isn't as big a gamble as signing a free agent your organization doesn't know as well.
