Default Liriano Signs With Pirates

According to mlb.com, Francisco Liriano has signed a two-year, $14 million deal with Pittsburgh.

Nice deal for him.

Default Francisco Liriano

I realize people /scouts judge talent differently but still, $14 million for Liriano? I figured he would sign with somebody for the minimum amount of money. I guess i was wrong. I take it that most of that money is guaranteed.

It just shows how desperate teams get for starting pitching. I'm glad the Sox didn't re-up with Liriano. Filthy stuff in his arsenal but the guy is wild, wild, wild.

I'm surprised the Cubs didn't pick him up. They've been picking up a lot relatively crappy pitching lately.

Oh man. Maybe a league switch will help, but that's silly.

National league hitters may cure his ills.

Liriano is not a good pitcher. Period. But there is a demand for starters with experience. Even those who only perform poorly.

Injury throws doubt into the deal.

I'm not surprised, the going rate for an average major league starting pitcher these days is in the 10-12 million range. Pirates probably have to offer a bit of a premium to attract free agents and are willing to gamble for a higher upside to get a starter at a relatively reasonable price. They'll probably regret it, but it's not like they're sinking the ship at that rate.
