I'm not going to start thinking magic numbers unless the Sox get at least one more win in this series. If they don't, we're back to being tied on Friday.

For those who found that formula hard to follow, here's the simplified version: take the remaining number of games, add one and then subtract the number of games separating the teams in the loss column. Right now, it would be:
22 games left + 1 - 3 games separating the Sox and Tigers = 20.

Cubune will likely run the Sox magic number in a graph with the Cubs attendance each day. Also, dust off all the BUT BUT . . . Their Neighborhood Is A Bad Bad Place articles. What will it be this time around? Pot smoking? Crime? The North Side's median planters have prettier fall flowers? It'll be something. May have to bring back the headline thread.

The RIOT number calculation is actually the more accurate measure as the formula can take into account the amount of wins possible for the team you are competing against for the playoff bid. Often times the RIOT number is less than the magic number although, as you can see at the RIOT website, the current White Sox RIOT# is the same as the magic number:
http://lyle.smu.edu/~olinick/riot/american_league.html The website also gives a decent explanation of how the math works and why it often differs from the traditional magic number, if you're interested. |

Magic number is 88, that wins the division. If we win 2 more in this series it's going to very hard for Detroit to catch us. If we sweep them, it's just about over.

I do not like when people say that x-amount of games will win the division. There's no way that is 100% guaranteed to happen! Just win and keep ahead of Detroit...That's it!

Since the Sesame Street video's chorus clearly copies Alice Cooper, here you go.
